| Late Saturday evening at 2:45 am, I heard this loud crash outside my window. I ran to my balcony with my binoculars and saw that a newer model silver MR2 had just sideswiped an older model red Paseo and both cars were now stalled in the fast lane adjacent to the carpool lane with their hazards on. My guess is the Paseo was in the middle of changing lane and contact was made with the MR2. About 8 cars passed in the next minute, some slowing down to honk, as most ran over the debris of shattered bumper fragments and reflector glass.
I watched in horror as a Camry came flying down at easily 95 mph+, without reacting to the hazard lights of the MR2 until the last second when he suddenly swerved, making heaving contact and careening the Camry into a 180 spin that slammed it against the center divider and crushing the MR2 further into the Paseo and then spinning it two lanes over.
The airbags were deployed inside the Camry (thru my binoculars) as 30 seconds later I saw a mid 20'ish year old couple get out of the Camry unharmed and rush over to the MR2. It was a safe guess that there must've been alcohol involved with the male driver as both of them were dressed in clubbing attire, she in a crop top and short skirt and he in designer jeans and collared shirt. They were already on their cell phones, calling the police.
There was no movement within the MR2 as the couple tugged open the partially crushed passenger door and struggled to pull the driver out thru the passenger door. In the process of pulling out the driver, his shirt and pants had came off (perhaps his clothes were entangled with the car parts), and he was lying in only his briefs on the cold highway lane. He wasn't moving at all, however I couldn't tell if he was knocked out cold or paralyzed.
A CHP car came flying in sirens blazing about 2 minutes later, while the female knelt on the ground holding the MR2 driver's head in her lap. As more CHP cars, a fire engine, and an ambulance showed up, I watched as both the Camry and the Paseo drivers were questioned. The Paseo had 2 youth males, both in leather jackets and jeans. The Paseo youth was given the "follow the flashlight and my finger" sobriety test and passed to the officer's satisfaction.
The driver of the Camry was not as fortunate. After the "flashlight and finger" test, he was given the "hop on one leg" test and proceeded to fail on both legs, stumbling sideways on each leg. He was then moved out of my sight for a few minutes, as I am assuming a breathalyzer test was administered. A few minutes later, he reappeared with his hands cuffed behind his back. The officer removed all the items from his pockets and put him into the back of the squad car.
The entire ordeal took an hour to clear up, with tow-trucks showing up to remove the massively damaged vehicles and fire fighters putting on and sweeping off the powder that absorbs the leaked engine oil. Even when the medics were working on the MR2 guy, he never moved or twitched his legs nor his arms. I think he's either dead or in a coma.
Anyways, this was my craziest sighting since two months ago when I saw a car next to me run over a dead body on 101-S. Another story for another day.
Be careful out there kids! that was quite a mood killer, so here's a pic of some furry animals. i also have 5 3-week old baby russian dwarf hamsters if anyone wants to adopt one haha.
